Isle of Barra

POSTED ON 7 March 2018

Isle of Barra Artwork

Barra is one on its own. The population of this island is just over one thousand people, and it’s only 8 miles long and 4 miles wide. This makes Barra one of the most inhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides.

The Airport

You’ll know Barra is special as soon as you land, since the airport is unlike any airport you’ve seen before. You’ll touch down in Cockle, on the beach with the tide at either side of you. When the tide’s high, the sandy runway stays beneath the waves. This is the only airport in the world with a beach runway! The perfect start to anyone’s holiday.

This island has recently won “The Most Beautiful Island” competition, so it’s definitely worth a trip!

Beaches!

Known for its white sandy beaches, blue skies, and clear turquoise water, you can enjoy the idyllic island by going on walks or cycling to Vatersay (a little isle off Barra which is even smaller – at being 3 miles long and wide). In Vatersay there’s also a beach near where the islands are linked by a causeway. This peaceful island is a great getaway.

You can even take part in the amazing kayak clearwater paddling from Castlebay. You can enjoy Heaval, the highest hill on Barra at 1257 feet. Barra also has a golf club, sports centre with a sauna and a cultural centre.

Traigh Eais is a lovely sandy beach over a mile long, and bordered on the east side by an extensive area of sand dunes.

Kisimul Castle

You can sail towards the medieval Kisimul Castle, which means “castle in the sea”.  There, you can look into the medieval past of the village and look into the small tower house from the Middle Ages. Next to it is an amazing cafe, where you can marvel at the castle while diving into a delicious meal of freshly caught seafood.

There’s a range of accommodation to say how little this island is – you can pick from hotels, holiday rentals or even caravan spots.

All with amazing views of this perfect like Barra-dise!
