What kind of fitness holiday is right for you?

POSTED ON 28 June 2018

Yogo Beach

Do you love to relax on holiday or are you all about the activities? If action-packed breaks are your cup of tea, you can now take it to the next level with a fitness holiday. But which type of fitness holiday is right for you?

25% of us want to lose weight on holiday and a third of us aim to tone up, according to a 2015 survey by Travelex. Yet holidays can be more about diving into your favourite food and drink than diving into the pool for 30 laps. And while there are always ways to work out or join in activities while you’re away, how many of us actually get round to visiting that sweaty hotel gym? Let’s face it, the lure of a long lie in or a leisurely cocktail by the pool usually wins.

However, fear not as there is another option out there! Fitness holidays are growing in popularity and there is so much choice. This is great news for holidaymakers searching for a healthier alternative to their usual all-inclusive carb-fest. Rather than forcing yourself into a daily workout while your friends top up their tans, fitness holidays are designed around exercise and healthy eating. This means you are surrounded by like-minded people and minimal temptation – win-win, right?

With that in mind, we decided to take a look at some different healthy hols out there to help you choose the right getaway for you and your fitness goals.

Sea swimming

Let’s face it, hotel pools are not exactly designed for serious swimmers. So, if you’re a water lover looking to shift the pounds while indulging your love of swimming, you may need to look a little further afield than your standard sunshine break.

We all know swimming is a great form of exercise. So it’s no wonder adventure swimming holidays are growing in popularity. In fact, more and more people are taking to the waves to tone up. SwimTrek runs adventure swimming holidays all over the world, with private boats to take you to some of the world’s best swimming spots. Their experts are on hand to dish out advice, tips and support along the way. After all, there are worse places to perfect your front crawl than the azure waters of the Greek islands!

Most adventure swimming holidays cover available from SwimTrek cover at least 4km a day. Therefore, while it isn’t an option for absolute beginners, they do welcome all ages and abilities who are confident they can cope with the packed swim schedule.

Check Skyscanner to find flights from your nearest airport to your chosen sea swimming destination.

Bootcamp

No willing mates to join you? No problem!

Bootcamps are a great option if you’re travelling solo on your fitness holiday. They are generally designed around single people taking part and making friends along the way!

While bootcamps have popped up all around the world, one of the most popular options is Bodycamp on the party capital of Ibiza. If you can bear to travel to the Balearic Isle without indulging in the cocktails and clubs, this is a great option to achieve your fitness holiday goals. Celebs like Caroline Flack swear by Bodycamp for its holistic approach to fitness. It incorporates yoga and meditation into the usual mix of workouts, weights and wheatgrass shots.

Does Bodycamp sound like the perfect fitness holiday for you? You can fly directly to Ibiza from Glasgow Airport, Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport. Your fitness goals could be a hop, skip and a flight away – what’s stopping you?

Yoga retreats

Yoga is the way to strengthen and tone right now. And as one of the most ancient forms of fitness, it looks like it’s here to stay.  Of course, it’s about more than just fitness. Its spiritual origins encourage those practising the ancient art to meditate and find their inner peace and balance. Naturally, the popularity of yoga means there are yoga retreats on offer all over the world and you’ll be spoilt for choice when you start your search.

Yoga Explorers offers yoga holidays all around the world, so you can pick the most Instagrammable destination that tickles your fancy. And with options like Thailand, Morocco and Italy, there’s bound to be something that rocks your boat.

Putting the “treat” in yoga retreat, fresh produce and local delicacies form the basis of delicious fusion menus for guests to fuel their workouts. Concentrating more on the holistic approach to yoga rather than weight loss, this kind of yoga holiday is not the one if you’re looking for a crash diet and sudden weight loss. However, if you want to hone your downward dog and experience an amazing getaway in the process, this is definitely worth exploring (there’s even wine and cake!).

Juice detoxes

On the other hand, if you are looking for drastic weight loss in a short space of time, there is a fitness holiday out there for you. Juice detoxes are not just for celebs, they’re cropping up everywhere as holidaymakers flock to shun solids in favour of a liquid diet (no, not that kind).

Juicy Oasis was set up by the king of juicing, self-proclaimed Juice Master Jason Vale. Guests to his luxury Portuguese resort can lose up to 7lbs in 7 days – but it’s not all down to the juice. Jason and his team of kale-fuelled fitness fanatics will whip you into shape through a series of trail runs, volleyball sessions and group exercise classes.

You can fly to Lisbon from any of our destinations, including Gatwick, Glasgow and Luton Airport, so if you want to drop the pounds in a hurry this is the place to do it.

If you fancy something different than the norm, you might want to check out Wildfitness.
